Our Services> Assistance for Seniors

Family Service of Glencoe has several initiatives to help seniors living in Glencoe.  The biggest initiative is administering the Senior Housing Program for the Committee for Senior Housing Aid.  This program  provides annual grants of $2500 to a number of Glencoe’s elderly with low incomes and small assets.  The grants help seniors pay their taxes, rents or mortgage payment, enabling them to continue to live in Glencoe where most of them have lived for much of their lives.   Family Service of Glencoe provides administration, supervision and screening services to determine eligibility for the grants and issues the grants, all in a confidential manner.

The number of beneficiaries has varied annually from 6 to 12 individuals.  Last year there were 9 households, consisting of 10 elderly individuals with an average age of 72 years old, who have lived in Glencoe an average of 25 years, and who have an average annual net income of $16,124.

All beneficiaries must live in Glencoe.  The present beneficiaries have lived on average 25 years in our Village.   To qualify, beneficiaries must be no less than 64 years of age and have resided in Glencoe for 4 years.  The household finances are $30,000 per year or less for two member household or $25,000 per year for individuals.  Assets must be $75,000 or less, excluding the home.

In addition to administering the Senior Housing Program, Family Service social worker, Paul Wachowiak, LCSW, assists the Committee for Senior Housing Aid and the elderly recipient by:

  • making home visits.
  • assisting residents with applications and processes to help them receive the benefits of such other programs as Meals on Wheels or in-home nursing care, etc.
  • partnering with Glencoe Public Safety to make frequent well-being checks during extreme weather.
  • routinely assisting the elderly with access to care.

The Senior Housing Program is citizen run and funded.  Family Service of Glencoe does not receive any financial reimbursement for any of the social services or administrative support given to elderly participants or to the committee.
