Finding Balance as the Seasons Change
By, FSG Clinical Director, Tami Sollo, LCSW
As the warmth of summer gives way to cooler temperatures and colorful autumn leaves, many of us look forward to the beauty and traditions of fall. While this season offers opportunities for reflection and renewal, it can also bring emotional challenges. Shorter days, less sunlight, and changing routines may affect our mood, energy, and overall sense of well-being. Taking time to care for our mental health during the fall can help us navigate the season with greater resilience and balance.
One of the simplest ways to support your mental wellness is to spend time outdoors each day. Even on cool or cloudy afternoons, natural light, fresh air, and physical activity can boost mood and reduce stress. Maintaining healthy routines-including regular sleep, balanced meals, exercise and hydration-also plays an important role. As back to school schedules and other responsibilities increase, it’s easy to neglect self-care, but even a few minutes each day can make a meaningful difference.
Fall is also a wonderful time to reconnect with others. Sharing a meal, attending community events, volunteering, or simply reaching out to a friend can strengthen relationships and reduce feelings of loneliness. Practicing gratitude is another simple habit that supports emotional wellbeing. Taking a few minutes each day to reflect on what you’re thankful for can increase optimism and help shift your focus toward the positive.
Mindfulness can help us slow down and appreciate the present moment. Notice the crisp air, vibrant leaves, or the comfort of a warm cup of tea. These small experiences can reduce stress and help us feel more grounded.
Finally, remember that asking for help is a sign of strength. If feelings of sadness, anxiety, or hopelessness persist or begin interfering with daily life, consider reaching out toa mental health professional. FSG is here to help!
As nature reminds us that change is a normal part of life, fall offers an opportunity to pause, reflect, and invest in our emotional well-being. With healthy habits, meaningful connections, and self-compassion, this season can become a time of growth, resilience, and renewed mental wellness.
